She bit the inside of her cheek, at a loss. Now what? "... does Gramsey still make that spiced orange tea?"
"... no." she said finally. "... I trust him, so... he wasn't the worst choice."
"He wasn't the worst choice?" Sparrow repeated, coaxing. Pari sighed and admitted begrudgingly, "... he was the best choice..."
"From a practical standpoint, or..." Sparrow rubbed her back. "Was there something else to it?"
"Why does it matter?"
"Doesn't it matter to be honest to yourself, Parisa? You're someone who always knows what they want. And you think everything through, always. That's why you're Kyros's right hand gal." Sparrow reasoned, "So... I'm sorry, honey, but I don't really know if I buy the 'it just happened' thing."
"Okay," Pari groaned. "Fine, yes, okay. Things have been weird for a while now, is that what you want to hear?"
"I'm just asking because I know you, Pari. And you're not that impulsive, not with important things like your own heart."
"Stupid." she said.
"Pari..."
"I don't know! He asked me out last night," she scoffed. "The dumbass."
"Why?" Sparrow's brow furrowed. Pari looked at her in disbelief. "First of all, I'm a princess. Isn't he working for Miz's thing? So he's supposed to be an "in-the-shadows" kind of guy. So it's a surefire way to fuck up his entire career."
She tucked her hands under her head, not looking at him. "I guess I'm still coming down from the adrenaline rush."
"Hey," she replied quietly, rolling over onto her back to stare up at the ceiling. Part of her wanted to be as far away from him as possible, but at the same time, navigating back to her room in the dark sounded like a bad idea. And she would have put more space between the two of them, but the downy mattress kept sinking anytime she pressed against it, so they ended up sliding together anyways. And... as morose and dull she felt now, she didn't want him thinking that she'd gotten off and was now turning him away. Even though that sort of was what she was doing, but it wasn't the sex. It was about everything else, everything that came after.
"Just thinking about everything we have to do tomorrow." she replied, allowing their conversation to fall into a lull.
"I must've really done a number on you if you're asking me the same thing again." she managed a scoff. "Didn't I just tell you?"
"What else do you want to hear about?" she asked. "The sex? It was-- just that. Fun. Good."
"Was it yours?"
Something in her gave way just a little bit. "Oh." she said, pulling the blanket up to her chin. What could she say next? Should she reassure him? But what reassurance could Pari, who'd also been a virgin, give him? "Me too."
